The court had a villain. We drew him.
Grumpy Pickle started on a public court with a sagging net and a permanent queue. We'd show up Thursdays after work, lose to a man in his sixties wearing actual jeans, and stay for two hours anyway.
There was one regular who treated every game like it was a tournament final. Called the kitchen line. Questioned every line call. Celebrated dinks like medals were being handed out. He never smiled. The rest of us were just trying to hit the ball over the net and laugh about it.
One night someone drew a scowling pickle in the corner of a scorecard — arms crossed, entirely done with everyone's enthusiasm — and we all knew exactly who it was. The mascot stuck: the sport is genuinely fun, and the pickle is furious about it.
We printed six shirts as a joke for our own group chat. Then strangers at the courts started asking where they could get one, which is a strange and flattering thing to be asked while losing 11–3. So we made more, properly this time.
Today it's a small operation. We draw every design ourselves, print on soft mid-weight cotton, and only release something when we'd actually wear it twice a week. No trend-chasing, no 400-item catalog, no shirts we've never touched.
What we do
- Draw every graphic in-house — no clip art, no generic templates.
- Print to order so we're not burning boxes of dead stock.
- Answer our own emails, usually within a business day.
What we don't do
- Fake countdown timers or “only 2 left” panic banners.
- Invented reviews. If a review is here, a real person wrote it.
- Pop-ups the second you land. You know how a shop works.
